CImarron Breeze concert with Claire Lynch, June 10th... we'll be opening...and other great concerts in June!

Cimarron Breeze concerts in June~

Monday, June 10th at 7pm:  CLAIRE LYNCH BAND!

Truly one of my all time favorite songwriters and bluegrass female vocalists!

She has won IBMA's Female vocalist of the year twice, has written so many great songs- many of them having been recorded by other bluegrass, country, and gospel artists.  Her band is made up of award winning instrumentalists, Matthew Wingate on guitar and mandolin, Bryan McDowell mandolin, fiddle, guitar- they actually share multi instrumentalist honors, and the amazing Mark Schatz, IBMA Bass player of the year at least twice that I know of, banjo player and clogger...he is also a well known producer.

is where you can listen to all of her great tunes and read about the fellers in the band!

Claire's brand new recording is out and it is wonderful!  I listened to the entire CD Sunday... wow!  All of the songs are produced so thoughtfully, many great hard driving bluegrass songs, and tender and beautiful folksy songs.  The title cut "Dear Sister" is a ballad of the Civil War written by Lynch and Louisa Branscomb.  It was based on recently discover letters written by a relative of Branscomb's on the eve of the battle of Stone river.  I love this song, Friends... you need to join me this Monday evening for this very special evening of songwriting and stories, 'spot on' instrumental work, and full harmonies by Miss Lynch and her hard working band.

The Monica Taylor Trio

This is a picture of Nancy Kamm and myself performing a show in Dallas, TX last August with John Fullbright on piano and Terry Ware on guitar.

The picture below is of me and Uncle Don playing the Cain's Ballroom last spring.

My trio- Uncle Don Morris, myself... and this time: the lovely Miss Nancy Kamm on the fiddle will open for Claire and her band. Gene Williams will be on the road playing guitar with our fellow Red Dirt artist, Greg Jacobs during this week (we'll miss him.)  Might have a guest guitar picker join us though- I'll be asking him this weekend!  (It's a surprise!) I really appreciate my good friend and amazing musician Travis Fite for stepping into driver's seat for Gene... behind the sound board.  Ya'll call now for your tickets to this show- you really will not want to miss it!  It's a Monday night for goodness sake- you can record The Antiques Roadshow!  (smile)

To purchase tickets in advance, please call 405-547-2411.  This is the office of The Perkins Journal newspaper and The Perkins Tag Agency.  They can take your ticket orders with your credit card.

www.okterritory.org  is the website with information about the concerts and the Plaza, just click on 'events.'

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.

*If you would like to come early for 'Meet & Greet' with the artists, come between 5:30 and 6pm, it will be an extra $5 but you will get to enjoy the 6pm interview with each of The Claire Lynch Band, a drink and snacks, get your seat for the evening... ask the performers questions about their careers, lies, etc....

Ya'll come to Perkins, OK for a night of music, at the Old Church Center located in the historical Oklahoma Territorial Plaza just north of Perkins, at 750 North Main. You can see all of the old buildings, railroad station, caboose, school, barns, church, Pistol Pete's old house from the intersection of highway 33 & highway 77.

Come early & stay late!  ~ see ya'll then,  Monica Taylor Johnson

More Cimarron Breeze & Songwriter concerts:

Saturday, June 29th at 7pm.... THE CHEROKEE MAIDENS & SYCAMORE SWING!  This is the western swing & jazz trio that I sing with... and our fabulous fellers in our Sycamore Swing band ~Kentucky White on guitar, Rob Loren on fiddle, James Holcutt on bass, and Kirk Russell on drums.

Robin Macy (Dixie Chicks, Big Twang, Domestic Science Club) and Jennifer Pettersen (Jenny Lou & the Buckroo) and myself (you know me!) make up the trio.  Robin called me up a few years ago and asked if I'd like to stay in the little guest house at her beautiful Bartlett Arboretum, have a Mimosa, and sing some old Bob Wills songs with her and a  gal who had been helping her work at the arboretum?  Okay, what am I going to say to that offer? YES!  We each enjoy the great outdoors, getting dirt under our nails and staining our knees with grass & soil... and we each write our own songs and play guitar, bass, and sing harmonies.... and LOVE western swing!  I feel like these two gals and I were sisters in an earlier life- in a family full of music and creativity.  We immediately fell into the tones and textures like families share when singing together.  Love them dearly.  During our show we will do our CM3 (Cherokee Maidens) tunes but we will also each take a guitar and play our own self-penned songs for you.

There is a potluck and 'dinner on the grounds' at 6pm. You might arrive just a little earlier to get a spot to plop down on- bring lawn chairs or blankets for this part. *The 'Meet & Greet' will be during this time for ALL who come for the potluck! This is where I'll ask each of the band members and the girls a few questions, and you get to do the same- a time to learn about each of us and our musical backgrounds. **I am going to have some of my lovely Red Dirt sisters there to help coordinate this dinner!  (Girls... if you would like to help and then have a campout at the house, give me a jingle!) But you're all invited to bring a dish for the potluck!

We will probably get started with the concert inside the church around 7:30 on this evening.  Going to give everyone time eat, visit, clean up, visit the powder room... and get settled in for the evening.  The guys in my trio usually help me open the evening, but I think I'll invite them up later in the show for a couple of my tunes, too.   This will be a very nice old-tyme summer gathering... the kind that the old Methodist church we'll sing in had hundreds of from it's 1892 beginning.  Ya'll come!

ALSO at the Old Church ~ Saturday, June 15th at 7:30pm  is our second Cimarron Songwriter Showcase concert featuring my dear friend Sarah Barker Huhn & Gypsy Twang! This gal and I have been friends for many years, and I have always sat there and shook my head, smiling and singing along with her well-crafted songs.  Her voice is 'mountain born'... she writes songs that are gritty and melodic, great stories, great choruses.  And her band really showcases the songs with an old country or bluegrass feel.  I'm not sure on who all will be there from the band; but, I know her husband Steve will be there upright bass, and Dan Nieto on guitar and vocals, maybe Jay Lesikar on keys... Jack Abraham on pedal steel?  It'll all be great!  THEN for the second set, we will presenting songs in the round.  That grouping will be Sarah, Dan, myself, Randy Pease, and Don Morris.  *Note about Randy below!   Ya'll come out and enjoy great songs by great folks... Jonna will have cold beverages and savory snacks ready for you, too!  Suggested donations at the door for these songwriter shows is $5-10.

POTLUCK DINNER BEFORE THE SHOW!   OH!  Yes, we'll invite you to bring a dish for our potluck dinner at 6:30pm this evening!  Looking forward to this time with some dear friends and their amazing songs... see you there? (smile)

**By the way, THANK YOU to all of ya'll who joined us for the May 23rd Cimarron Songwriter showcase featuring Joe Baxter & The Lost Cause- with Chuck Dunlap, Rick Reilly, John Williams, Kurt Neilsen, and Rachael Wagnon joining in for the second set of writers in the round!  Marco, you and Rachael were fabulous as The Lost Cause- amazing harmonies and playing!  We also raised over $200 for the Oklahoma Red Cross!

Saturday, June 8th, South West City (MO)  *I am doing a House concert with some of my favorites writers and musicians at this old farm just 30 minutes from Grove, OK... Chuck Dunlap, Patrick Williams, John Williams, and Nancy Kamm on the fiddle!  What a line up!  I'm sure Patrick and I will pull some old Farm Couple songs out our guitar cases, and John Williams will 'blow you away' with his songs and his harmonica playin', Chuck's songs leave a person hankerin' to learn 'that one' and 'that one!'  Nancy is one of the absolute best fiffle players I have ever heard.  Her western swing and bluegrass playing is saltier and purtier than any you've heard... and she's always ready to  jump in there when someone gives her the nod!  She and I have a few shows on the books for the next few months- including Woody fest!  They have me down for Saturday at 11am... and Nancy will be with me! There will be camping, pickin', potluckin... come early in the day and set up your tent or trailer around the old spring fed pond that is ice cold and ready for swimmers! Suggested donations for the concert is $10-20, or whatever you would like pitchin! (grin) For more information, please see the announcement flyer at the bottom of this letter.  Or call me at 405-612-3183  or Joyce Morris at 417-762-3191.  Concert begins at 7pm.... potluck begins during the intermission.

Friday, June 14th at Eskimo Joe's in Stillwater, OK from 8-11pm.  Ya'll come on down to Joe's for our monthly Red Dirt Rendezvous show- this month Uncle Don, Brother Gene, and I will be hosting our Red Dirt cousin Randy Pease!  Yes, you heard correctly!  Randy Pease is driving back this June to spend some time in okieland, and he's bringing his beautiful and talented daughter, Lily with him!  We'll have to invite her up to sing a couple of songs for ya'll!   Randy has written so many songs that our 'family' of Red Dirt artists have taken with them and played show after show, have recorded, and have been inspired his songwriting and performing.  Let's see "Saw Dust Trail," "I Love this Game," "Rosalie," just to name a few.  This will be my last Red Dirt Rendezvous gathering until the end of Sept. because I'll be traveling north by northwest to play music for a month- and to camp ad see old friends!  More on that later, Tater!

This picture of is of me & Randy at last year's Red Bull Gypsy Cafe's festival in Stillwater- we played the Eskimo Joe's stage!

Thursday, June 20th from 7-8pm Uncle Don, Gene Williams, and I will be performing on the OSU campus for their Summer Evening concerts.  Will be outside on the northside (I believe) of the student union.  Ya'll come enjoy a burger or sandwich from one of the vendors and listen to us render for ya'll!

~I also have a few more Cherokee Maiden concerts in June- they are in Kansas,  Will send out another newsletter with these details later on.

Much love from this Red Dirt girl,

Concert stuffin's for April~

Friends & Neighbors!   Wanted to let you know about this Red Dirt girl's musical doin's for the next month... sure would like to have ya'll join me!

April 4th, Thursday 6-7pm The Monica Taylor Trio will be performing at the OSU Little Theater in the Student Union, in Stillwater, OK on the beautiful Oklahoma State University campus.

This trio is made up of myself, my Uncle Don Morris, and Gene Williams.   We'll be playing all Woody Guthrie songs from 6-7pm to help get the audience ready for the movie "Bound for Glory."  This is a great old movie about Woody Guthrie's life, written by Guthrie as well.  Our friend and Oklahoma Folk music historian, songwriter, author Guy Logsdon has recorded the introduction to this movie. This year would have been Woody's 100th year...  the movie begins at 7pm. Free to all!  More information for this event can be found here:   http://www.library.okstate.edu/news/onebook/images/OBOC0404.pdf

April 12th, Friday 8-11pm at Eskimo Joe's in Stillwater, OK   A Red Dirt Rendezvous, with our special guest this month:  Tom Skinner!
Here's a picture of Tom, doing one of the things he loves most.

Along with Uncle Don Morris, myself,  and Gene Williams, I am happy to say that Tom Skinner will be rendering and sharing the evening with us for our second gathering of kindred Red Dirt songwriters, musicians, and souls.  Skinner, one of our Red Dirt music godfathers, fabulous songwriters & performers, and dear friend of ours for 2-3 decades, is loved by artists throughout the spectrum of the Oklahoma, Texas... regional music scene, and many countries beyond America.  Together with Morris and Williams, Tom has traveled to Europe on a few occasions.  They have a CD together.  The Wednesday Night Science Project is a show that Tulsans have been enjoying on a weekly basis for 15 years at least.  Led by these three men and including other cream of the crop musicians, they welcome other working musicians who 'drop in' for the show to get up play a song- and many touring artists will make The Colony their first stop after sound check at their own gig. Skinner has a new CD out this year that as been long-awaited by fans.

Two great videos of Tom, Don, and Gene while on tour in the Netherlands last year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyw7yO23X4g   and   http://www.nme.com/nme-video/youtube/id/kCiP4ectRrY

I always include a Tom Skinner tune in my shows- or a song that I once heard him sing and said "Dog-gonnit!  I gotta learn that song!"  These Red Dirt Rendezvous shows are a great time to hear a Red Dirt performer of renown share stories about his or her own music... and this particular night of Friday, April 12th will be such a treat for all who come out!   The shows will be up on top of Joe's on the new rooftop patio!  We had such an awesome time last month performing under the stars with our special guest Bill Erickson!

See ya'll there~ Monica

Jimmy Lafave returns to Payne county with his fabulous Night Tribe band!   Thursday, April 25th at 7pm in Perkins, OK at the old church in the Oklahoma Territorial Plaza!

From the beginning of the Red Dirt music scene of writers and performers, there was Bob Childers and Jimmy Lafave.  Best of friends and both great songwriters n Stillwater, OK back in the late 70's and early '80s,  they started playing their original songs out for Payne county folks.  They also applauded and respected other songwriters in the area, and this pretty large group of friends coined the term Red Dirt to explain their style of music... the name stuck.  Now 35 years later,so many artists carry the label 'Red Dirt' along with the other labels that fans put on them.  The music that Lafave and Childers started has now been sung and played all across the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and so many other corners of the globe.  Pretty cool, huh?

Please visit his website and read- and grin- as you read his remarkable road to becoming an Americanna icon and songwriter of world renown.... he's also a downhome feller who has the Texas and Oklahoma roots seeded deep in his being.  A man who appreciates and supports music folks everywhere he goes.  He's a good man with a good heart.  Woody Guthrie would be proud to say- "Jimmy Lafave  is carrying on my music and has helped my family begin a darn good folk festival in my home town of Okemah... they didn't need to put my name on the front of the festival name, though..."  (Woody probably wouldn't have wanted his name so big and bold as "The Woody Guthrie Free Folk Festival" ...might have been happy to see that it is 'free' to all who want to come though!)

The following is the first paragraph of Lafave's website...   http://www.jimmylafave.com/biography/bio.html
Jimmy LaFave was born in Wills Point, Texas, a small town 30 miles east of Dallas. He began school down the road in Mesquite and by Junior High was making music perched behind his Sears & Roebuck drum kit. It wasn’t long before his mother traded a drawer full of green stamps for his first guitar and the switch to singer–songwriter was in progress. His family later moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma, where he finished high school. Although he has lived in Austin for over 20 years, many people think of him as being from Oklahoma, because of his strong musical ties to the state and what he often refers to as its “red dirt music.” It was in this landscape that he began to define his sound and soak up a combination of his experiences among authentic songwriters from the tradition of Woody Guthrie. Before leaving Oklahoma for Austin, Jimmy did some independent recording and toured the southwest with the first version of his band Night Tribe.

I've known Jimmy since I was 20 years old... a couple of decades (smile!)  My bluegrass-folk band in college was called The Wayfaring Strangers: Brett Franzmann, Pam Potts, Mark Mars, and myself.  We played the Stillwater Musicians Reunion at Willie's that Jimmy put together... he was setting up my microphone for me and I remember asking him, "Oh, thank you...and what is your name?"  Thought he was the soundman.  He smiled at me and said "I'm Jimmy... glad ya'll could come play."  I had just Bob Childers for the first time that evening, and then I met Jimmy.

He's been a friend ever since that night.... so has Bob.  (grin)   I sure would love to pack the house and to give each of you an evening of great music and laughs and maybe tears for the next few months... beginning with the first Cimarron Breeze concert on Thursday, April 25th at the old Methodist church, now sitting in the Oklahoma Territorial Plaza in Perkins, OK.  The show begins at 7pm, tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door... or you can purchase the Season Ticket for $100 that gives you an hour before the show with the artist or band, hor' derves and such, and a comfy chair for every show.    Contact me here, or go to the website link that is on this letter, for more info about getting your name on our list for these 6 great Cimarron Breeze concerts, and information on the Songwriter Showcases that feature many regional artists of high acclaim.

.

Other April shows that I’ll be a part of, or attending:

April 13th,  at the Stillwater Community Center at 7pm, 'Time Changes Everything'  is a two man play that focuses on the possibility of Bob Wills and Woody Guthrie and a chance meeting they didn't have... but what they might have talked about, and the music they would have played, had they met.  John Cooper and Brad Piccolo(of the Rangers) do a great job portraying Bob Wills & Woody Guthrie and a meeting on the road maybe in the 30's or 40's.  The Red Dirt Rangers band will do a concert  following the play.  The play was written by John Woolley and Thomas Conner - two well known writers from Tulsa, and directed by Vern Stefanics.  It is awesome and has received high accolades across the state.  It will be the last of the Stillwater Public library, OSU Library, and OSU Student Union collaboration on "Woody Guthrie Celebrations!"  SO, ya'll come out to enjoy this evening of fine writing and acting, and then a concert by the whole band of Red Dirt Rangers!  I'll see you there... AND, it's my darling feller husband's birthday, so wish him a 'Happy Birthday!' when you see us.

April 13th & 14th, Art at the Arb at the historic Bartlett Arboretum in Belle Plaine, KS.
Look at Robin's fabulous schedule of performers for this art and antiques show.  Also, look at the list music performances she has coming to the Arb to perform for her spring, summer, and fall concert series:  The Tree House Concerts.  http://www.bartlettarboretum.com/  Good golly, Miss Molly!

AND...Our western swing band- The Cherokee Maidens- is playing on Mother's Day!   It is a lovely time where folks enjoy sitting under the trees and picnicking with mom, or anyone! We'll sing so many great old songs, you are promised an afternoon you will not forget!  We also do our own tunes... three part harmonies and amazing musicians... come on up, friends!

April 24th, Wednesday 5-9pm at Eskimo Joe’s in Stillwater, OK   The Annual Bob Childers Tributewith more Red Dirt musicians than you can shake a stick at!  Love this time spent with fellow musicians who treasure our dear Bobarah... and all of the folks who loved him and his music!

April 26th, Friday night   * Uncle Don and I will be performing a couple of sets at The Red Fern Music Festival in Tahlequah, OK!   One set is on the festival stage (6:30) and the other will be at The Branch stage, outside of the lovely fine dining establishment, The Branch (10pm.)

April 27th, Saturday 3--11pm     The Grand Opening of the Woody Guthrie Archives in downtown Tulsa, OK… The Brady district.  At The outdoor stage, The Guthrie Green, great songwriters will be performing the whole afternoon- 3:00pm  The location for the Guthrie Green is 111. E. Brady, and the new Woody Guthrie Archives is located in the old warehouse right next door.

Performing for the Grand Opening of the Woody Guthrie Archives, are:  Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, Jimmy LaFave, Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion, The Red Dirt Rangers, and Parker Milsap.

*I am going to be hanging here the whole day and night- hope to see you there?

SOOOO excited that the Guthrie family and the Kaiser Foundation (and so many others who have helped to make this happen) have decided to bring Woody’s archives home to Oklahoma!  I say ‘home’ because this state is where Woody grew up, but so many of the writings and such in the archives will be stepping ‘foot’ in this state for the very first time.

The Rangers have a great new website that has some information for the new archives, follow this link.   http://www.reddirtrangers.com/2013/03/red-dirt-rangers-in-tulsa-on-42713/
